A common question we are asked when meeting with potential clients is whether they should purchase the paint and materials for their project or if they should allow the contractor to buy the necessary products.

Here are a couple things to consider before moving forward-

Cost: The biggest factor to take into consideration is cost- if you receive a project bid that only includes labor and not materials, be wary! Most contractors get steep discounts from suppliers such as Sherwin Williams and Guiry’s due to the volume of paint they purchase annually. These discounts are often greater than what is offered to the general public and always higher than basic wholesale costs. Also, you will have to purchase more than just paint. Typically a painting project will require- primer, rollers, brushes, plastic coverings, caulk, sandpaper, drop cloths, rags, painters tape, paint trays, etc. The cost of the paint plus all of the sundries can really add up!

Time: Another thing to consider is your time- if you are asked to provide the paint and materials you may need to take several trips to the supplier to get all of the necessary items. If you buy too much or the wrong thing you may have to return some of it to the store and you may not be able to do so due to return policies (for example- if you order the incorrect paint color you cannot return this to most suppliers). If you don’t buy enough paint you’ll have to make yet another trip to the store.

When you hire a professional painting company you shouldn't have to be involved in the nitty-gritty process- leave it up to us! At Exemplary Painting we are committed to providing you the best possible experience which includes letting us handle the purchasing of all required materials. All of our estimates include labor AND materials so you know exactly what your project will cost- no hidden costs or fees ever!

Unfortunately a project bid that only includes labor may seem like a great deal and may look less expensive than our all encompassing bid but in our experience when you start to add up all of the materials and time needed you will almost always end up spending more.
